Ear piercings & sizes
At Loocq , we believe every ear is unique – but a little guidance is always helpful when creating your ear stack. Whether you're just getting your first piercing or already have a whole collection, it's helpful to know the different types of ear piercings and the most common sizes .
In this guide, we list the most popular ear piercings and explain why we usually work with 6mm bars – one of the most commonly worn sizes – but also offer a number of 8mm models.
Types of ear piercings & recommended sizes
1. Helix
- Location: The outer edge of the ear (top edge)
- Type of jewelry: Barbell, labret stud, ring
- Common size:
Thickness (gauge): 1.2 mm
Length: 6 mm or 8 mm
✔️ At Loocq we mainly work with 6mm labret rods – perfect for healed helix piercings or a sleek, elegant look
2. Lobe (earlobe)
- Location: Lower soft part of the ear
- Jewelry type: Studs, hoops, labret
- Common size:
Thickness: 0.8 – 1.0 mm
Length: 6mm is standard for second or third holes
✔️ Our minimal studs and labrets with 6mm rods are ideal for second or third ear piercings.
If your piercing has not yet fully healed, choose a large size (8mm) to allow for some extra room for swelling.
3. Tragus
- Location: The small piece of cartilage that sits partly in front of the ear canal
- Jewelry type: Small stud or labret
- Common size:
Thickness: 1.2 mm
Length: 6 mm
✔️ For tragus piercings, a short barbell like 6mm is the perfect choice – beautifully subtle and comfortable.
4. Forward helix
- Location: The front of the ear, just above the tragus
- Jewelry type: Small stud
- Common size:
Thickness: 1.2 mm
Length: 6mm or smaller
5. Conch
- Location: The middle part of the ear
- Jewelry type: Ring or labret
- Common size:
Thickness: 1.2 mm
Length: 6mm for studs, larger diameter for hoops (10–12mm)
6. Daith
- Location: Inner fold of the ear
- Jewelry type: Ring (often clicker)
- Common size:
Thickness: 1.2 mm
Diameter: 6–8 mm
Why 6mm is a safe and stylish choice
At Loocq we often choose jewelry with a thickness of 1.2 mm and a length of 6 mm , because this:
- Fits comfortably with most piercings
- Perfect for healed piercings (less slack)
- Looks elegant (not too far from the ear)
- Combines well in a stacked ear look
Note: Do you have a fresh piercing? Then a little more length is often necessary to accommodate swelling. For fresh piercings, we always recommend visiting a professional piercer.
